Visit the Active Volcano on the Big Island
Everybody wants to see red hot lava! There isn't any right now on Maui ... our last eruption here was a little over 200 years ago. But the Big Island of Hawaii offers the safest volcano viewing in the world. Kilauea has been oozing lava non-stop for the last 25 years ... it typically flows downhill from the active vent toward the ocean through a series of tubes and surface flows.

Typical itinerary: direct flight departs Maui at 9am ... arrive in Hilo at 9:40am. Pick up rental car and drive to see the volcano. Return flight departs Hilo at 6:40pm, connects in Honolulu, and arrives back on Maui at 8:42pm

Typical itinerary: direct flight departs Maui at 9am ... arrive in Hilo at 9:40am. Pick up rental car and drive to see the volcano. One night at a Hilo Hotel. Next morning 8:18am return flight, getting back into Maui at 8:52am

Typical itinerary: direct flight departs Maui at 9am ... arrive in Hilo at 9:40am. Pick up rental car (two day rental) and drive to see the volcano. One night at hotel in Hilo. Spend the second day visiting Rainbow Falls, Akaka Falls, etc. 5:40pm return flight which connects in Honolulu and then arrives back on Maui at 7:42pm

Typical itinerary: Same as two day / one night package, but adds a 45-50 minute helicopter tour over the active volcano on the morning of day two.

If you are the adventurous kind, consider doing an overnighter to the Big Island. If you are in good physical condition, this package gives you time to hike close to the active flow ... and witness the spectacle at night when the lava is most brilliant. This package includes airfare, rental car, and hotel accommodations.

If you are interested in adding one of these packages, consider doing it at the end of your Maui vacation. You might be able to cut back on your Maui accommodations by one night and save yourself a little money. Also, if you have a late evening mainland return flight from Maui, you can check your luggage in at Hilo all the way to the mainland! When you arrive back on Maui you won't have to recheck your luggage.
