Visit the Active Volcano - Kilauea on the Big Island

Share    Email Page

Everybody wants to see red hot lava! There isn't any right now on Maui ... our last eruption here was over 200 years ago. But the Big Island of Hawaii offers the safest volcano viewing in the world. Kilauea has been oozing lava non-stop for the last 30 years ... it typically flows downhill from the active vent toward the ocean through a series of tubes and surface flows.

Here is a link to a webpage that highlights the current eruptive activity, with photos of lava and maps showing the lava flows. This page is updated almost daily. Take a look at this site and then come back here and book your volcano adventure! http://hvo.wr.usgs.gov/activity/kilaueastatus.php

ACTIVITY TIPS

Kevin at Falls

Big Island Tips ... which airport you should fly into. Kona is a long drive from the volcano. You really need to fly into Hilo ... and all of our packages on this page will take you into this airport. Kona is a 4 hour drive to Volcanos National Park ... but it is just 45 minutes from the Hilo airport.

Park admission is currently $10 ... BUT keep your receipt if you have already visited Haleakala National Parl on Maui. Admission at one park covers you for admission to the other park for up to a week from your first entry.

Overnight packages and where to stay. If you want to see the glow of red lava at night lighting the steam cloud pouring out of Kilauea Caldera after dark, it is best to arrange accommodations in the town of Volcano. One caution ... things close up early in that town so you might want to grab a sandwich somewhere and eat it while watching the sunset at the crater rim.

Depending on flow conditions, it is sometimes possible to see lava at the ocean entry point in the Puna district. If you plan to attempt this hike, you probably want to find accommodations in Hilo or find a listing on vrbo.com (Vacation Rental by Owner). .
