Central Valley

Maui is known as "the Valley Isle" because it was formed by two different volcanoes. These two mountains rose out of the sea, and through ages of erosion, an isthmus was formed. The two volcanoes were connected and formed the island in the shape we see today.

If you think of Maui's shape as a thumb and a fist, the thumb is the West Maui mountains. This volcano is much older than East Maui, and shows signs of dramatic sculpting from the erosive powers of water and wind.

Haleakala, Maui's 10,000 foot tall volcano, forms the fist of the island. This volcano is sleeping right now, but is still considered to be potentially active. Many scientists believe it is overdue for an eruption.

Browse each of the sections of the island to get an idea of the geography, resorts, beaches, and activities in each section.
